I feel in love with this book while doing research on cooking pantry items from scratch.  It’s a monster of a cookbook, heavy and saturated with color and images.  In between the art design and the cool graphics, is the story of a life well spent.

Recipes are told as if the author, Yvette Van Boven,  was a dear friend.  Nothing is complicated. Everything looks delicious and accessible but oh, so very stylish.  I enjoy the way the author says “Let’s get started.” when laying out step by step instructions. Yes, let’s!

This is quickly becoming my new favorite and I can see myself cooking from its pages well into summer and then on to autumn.

A giveaway seems appropriate because I have to share this wonderful book.

Tell me about your favorite homemade pantry item.  Or, tell me what you wish you could make from scratch.

Giveaway ends Sunday at 9:00PM (Pacific)  Winner announced Monday.

For more information about this dutch author and her amazing work, visit http://www.yvettevanboven.com/

I love making homemade granola bars and they do not last very long. In no time my two daughters and husband will have them finished. Also a great thing to make with my girls!!!!

Carol Snyder June 22, 2012 at 12:07 pm

I wish I could find a recipe for what my grandmother called “Greek Soup”. The only thing I can remember is, when she maked chicken stock (with fresh chicken) and once that was completed she added rice, milk, lemon juice and beaten eggs (adding them very slowly so they wouldn’t cook). My grandmother lived on a farm and everything was fresh from the barn.

I would love to find a great, basic tomato sauce recipe that could easily serve as a base to modify into pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce or other types of tomato sauces.

ursula osores June 22, 2012 at 12:09 pm

I’m thinking about making tomatoes preserves from scratch. My grandmother used to make them for me, so I would love to pass her recipe from generation to generation.

LaDonna June 22, 2012 at 12:10 pm

My favorite thing dish from scotch would be Perogis that my Grandmother made and then passed to my Mom. I still haven’t mastered them yet! I always thought cooking from scratch was difficult and time consuming (the Perogis are!). Not at all! Fresh 20 has been easy, I want to learn more “from scratch” recipes. My new favorite pantry item is grape seed oil!

I am learning to make many things from scratch that I previously purchased pre made. I did this mainly for convenience, but found it was sabotaging our health. I am in the infant stage and searching diligently to find lower calorie healther options for my family. I have a husband that is diabetic, a 13 year old that is overweight and a 21 year old that has finally been converted to trying to eat healthier and is now desparately seeking to attend college to study nutrition. I am so proud of her for losing 25 pounds and seeking to better her health and the health of others. A new cookbook would be awesome for us in our new adventure.

I have an abundance of fresh veggies from our local farm share and wish I had a recipe for the pickled vegetables served at an amazing oyster company my husband and I recently visited in San Francisco. They were the perfect blend of sweet and salty with a great crunch. Mmmm…

Sasha June 22, 2012 at 12:37 pm

I love to make home made salad dressing. I can not stand dressing from a bottle, so I like to experiment with flavored vinegars and oils to make delicious dressings!

Ruth June 22, 2012 at 12:45 pm

Love making all my food from their original forms. I belong to a CSA and grow a lot of my own produce. I bought tower garden by Juice Plus so I can grow indoors in the winter to get healthier food. Looking forward to reading the whole book!

Shannon June 22, 2012 at 12:51 pm

My two boys absolutely love cereal, but cringe at the idea of buying store-bought cereals. I am always on the search for homemade cereal recipes to try.

Ed Paulis June 22, 2012 at 1:00 pm

The Fresh 20 is great. Encourages me to try food I would never have thought of

Anne-Marie A. June 22, 2012 at 1:00 pm

my current favorite item to make is homemade ranch dressing. have to keep it on hand for all the yummy salads.

Marie June 22, 2012 at 5:03 pm

I would love this recipe please

Bonnie Malcolm June 22, 2012 at 1:07 pm

I want to learn what spices goes best with what fresh vegetables. I love fresh dished but I still do not know what spices to use with garden vegetables.

Katherine June 22, 2012 at 1:09 pm

I am trying to make a lot of the basics from scratch these days. Items like taco seasoning mix and ranch dressing to avoid the unhealthy additives. I would like to know how to make cream of chicken or mushroom soup from scratch to use in recipes that call for them.

JenJacks June 22, 2012 at 1:16 pm

I want to learn how to make granola bars from scratch. My kids love them and it seems we go through several boxes a week.
We have found that our son’s behavior and attention is better when he eats a whole food diet instead of a processed food diet. I would love to have more recipes in my arsenal to make for him.

Haley N June 22, 2012 at 1:17 pm

I love making whole wheat pancakes from scratch! The kids LOVE them – way better than any box could make. Molasses and cinnamon are the “secret” ingredients…

Rachel June 22, 2012 at 1:32 pm

I’ve never done it, but I’d love ot make ketchup from scratch. While I like the idea of no high fructose corn syrup mucking it up, my real inspiration is from the old Judy Garland movie “Meet Me in St. Louis”. I remember watching as a child amazed that ketchup could be homemade, and I decided that one day I would. Add that to my to-do list!

Marie June 22, 2012 at 5:02 pm

I have a recipe for diet ketchup – 1 can (46 oz) tomato juice
1/2 cup wine vinegar
garlic powder to taste
1 Tbsp. artificial sweetener
1/2 tsp. ginger

Combine all ing. in covered saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove lid and simmer until thick – approx. 1 hour – stir occasionally. This is especially good with chicken and meats.

Sara S June 22, 2012 at 1:34 pm

I’d love to find a way to preserve tomatoes and peaches that don’t include a bpa filled can. I’ve never done any kind of canning/jarring, so a book would be very helpful!

Ginny June 22, 2012 at 1:51 pm

I love to make ravioli from scratch, it is time consuming and so good to eat it won’t last very long, but it beats any frozen one anytime I made those! And you can get creative with the filling….

Michelle June 22, 2012 at 1:57 pm

I love making things from scratch and usually do because of all my allergies, but I would love to be able to give my dogs healthier food and treats that are better for them. Most dog foods and treats are chemically process or really expensive so I think making it from scratch would be helpful.

tracy quewezance June 22, 2012 at 2:09 pm

I absolutely love making italian sausage lasagna from scratch.I always make several and freeze larhe family size and individual portion ones, too pull out ,rather than fastfood when time is an issue.

lauralee June 22, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Andrea June 22, 2012 at 2:24 pm

I would love to learn how to bake from scratch. The fresh 20 has helped me learn how to cook with no packaged or frozen food. And my husband loves the recipes too. I feel like I am cooking the way my grandmothers both did when my parents grew up on farms. Now I just need a goat and chicken in the back yard for fresh milk and eggs:)

anna liza June 22, 2012 at 2:32 pm

my current favorite pantry item, which isn’t really the pantry item but we ALL fell in love with it last night: the Fresh20 melon gazpacho!!!!!! O.M.G. ! ! ! even my picky kids added this to their favorites thanks to the fresh 20! i know its not a pantry item but we hope to get a chance to win your amazing cook book.

Vicky Radley June 22, 2012 at 2:42 pm

I love making an easy homemade soup based on the following ingredients: canned tomatoes, whole, chopped, diced or whatever is on hand, organic box of broth (I usually use vegetarian but you can use chicken), can of chick peas, and some lentils ( I have used canned if I am out of them).
I lightly fry chopped onions, green pepper, celery, carrots, parsley and include whatever green leafy vegetables (chopped) that are left over in a tbsp of olive oil – adding broth as needed.
I add three to six cloves of pressed garlic at the end.
If I want it spicy I am some salsa, sometimes I add cumin.
Combine and cook.
Season to taste.
Sometimes i use the immersion blender briefly to combine everything — but I also leave a few bits of vegetables and chickpeas.
Sometimes I put some pesto or some sour cream on top just before serving.
This new cookbook sounds wonderful!

Kat June 22, 2012 at 2:45 pm

I have made my own Mayo for years. I like it so much better then store brands and I can change the flavor by using different oils. This cookbook sounds great!

Carolyn June 22, 2012 at 2:56 pm

i love to make homemade quiche….
Using fresh veggies : )

Kara Su June 22, 2012 at 2:59 pm

I’m absolutely ecstatic that my 8YO is enthusiastically eating fruits, veg, and salads with dinner each night. I’d like to learn to make an ambrosia recipe that doesn’t eat up too many WW Points Plus points with the dressing.

Stephanie June 22, 2012 at 3:06 pm

I love your Balsamic Vin Dress :)
Use it in our pasta salads and greens

DOTTIE PARR June 22, 2012 at 3:25 pm

I would love to make low-fat protein bars from scratch! And learn how to dry & preserve fruit without preservatives for a good take along snack!

Suzanne Wynn June 22, 2012 at 3:36 pm

I would love a quick, easy, TASTY salsa recipe!

christy June 22, 2012 at 3:37 pm

I love cooking from scratch! I just don’t do it often enough…
My fave is homemade pasta sauce with garden tomatoes. Mmmm. It may be time to get the giant stock pot out again!

Tasha June 22, 2012 at 3:49 pm

I love making salsa from scratch you just can not compare how much better it is than store bought.

monelle June 22, 2012 at 4:23 pm

i wish i could make salsa as good as any mexican restaurant, mine is just always ok. nothing i would give serve to another person.

Emily Pierce June 22, 2012 at 4:28 pm

My favorite homemade recipes are for salad dressings. Homemade is so much better than anything you can find at the store. We are currently loving a cilantro lime jalapeno creamy dressing that is great on a crisp romaine salad. I also love my Mom’s french dressing recipe. Very yummy!

Eileen June 22, 2012 at 4:31 pm

My family would enjoy some grab-and-go breakfast bars made from scratch. How about lots of protein, oats, dried fruit and not too sweet.

Kelli Hays June 22, 2012 at 5:16 pm

I would love to make homemade granola or granola type bars that my kids would enjoy. I am really enjoying introducing all of this fresh food to my family. So far it has been very welled received!!! thank you!!!

Alison Gomes June 22, 2012 at 5:34 pm

I would love to learn how to make a good sourdough bread, but extra sour. My husband and I absolutely love it but finding it is near impossible. We have tried so many and continue to keep trying with no luck. On a rare occasion we come across a delicious loaf but when we go back for more its a different batch and not as tasty. If I could make my own our endless search would be over!

Marie June 22, 2012 at 5:37 pm

I would like to learn how to make gnocchi. I alway order this in an Italian restaurant.

Krista Furtney June 22, 2012 at 5:47 pm

I wish I could learn to make really good allergy free bread! My daughter has wheat, dairy and egg allergies. It is so hard to get the right texture and something good.

Brooke June 22, 2012 at 6:07 pm

I learned to make hummus while working in a Lebanese restaurant and now can not imagine eating store bought.

Diane June 22, 2012 at 7:15 pm

I would love to get hold a really yummy, protein-packed, granola bar recipe…and cookie recipe. If I could make “treats” that are really healthy, high in protein, low in sugar but taste yummy enough to fool my kids…THAT.would.be.FABULOUS!!!

Marilyn June 22, 2012 at 7:17 pm

Great addition to garden cooking!

Hulda Black June 22, 2012 at 7:49 pm

This looks amazing. I’d love to make these things from scratch. I’d love to make a simple cracker that my kids love that is healthy from scratch.

Jen June 22, 2012 at 7:49 pm

I have recently been diagnosed as pre-hypertension. I am trying so hard to find low sodium foods, but it is almost impossible unless it’s homemade. Now I’m trying to find recipes for those everyday items I always took for granted. Things like ketchup are so high in sodium, it’s crazy.

Cassie K June 22, 2012 at 7:52 pm

I wold love to learn to make pasta from scratch. As a child, I grew up watching my great grand mother make her own pasta and loved to help. Now as an adult, I wish she was still around to show me the ropes. Since I love to make sauce from scratch, the added freshness of homemade pasta would make the dish perfect-o!

Jackie June 22, 2012 at 8:00 pm

This book sounds fantastic and a perfect compliment to our new garden. The Fresh 20 has opened our taste buds and we’ve made so many new meals. It’s truly amazing how much better our meals are with fresh ingredients. Thank You Fresh 20!

Anne June 22, 2012 at 8:31 pm

I really love my husband’s homemade whole wheat crackers, and I look forward to having him teach me the recipe when we have a free day together. Store bought crackers taste completely awful to me ever since I tasted my husband’s version.

Mindi June 22, 2012 at 9:14 pm

We love making homemade vanilla kefir icecream from our homemade kefir. A yummy probiotic packed treat!
