Giving Back to Be the Match
The cure for blood cancer is in the hands of ordinary people, like you.
For the thousands of people diagnosed every year with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, a cure exists. Over the past 25 years Be The Match®, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), has managed the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world. We work every day to save lives through transplant.
I remember the day I found out my brother was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I can tell you exactly where I was standing, down to the color of the walls. I remember what I was wearing and I can still hear my mom’s voice. We would fight this head on together. During his battle, and after many failed treatments, the doctors decided he needed a marrow transplant. After a search of the registry came up empty, I was asked to do a test. As his sibling I had a 1 in 4 chance of being a viable donor. My heart broke when I was told I was not a good enough match.
I know most people don’t think about these things until their family is affected. It’s been 5 years since my brother passed away. I share a piece of his journey with you because I truly believe there is hope. You can help give a mother, son, brother, sister, husband, wife, or father the match my brother didn’t have. You could be someone’s cure.
